Harpal Brar and Ella Rule: Imperialism in the Middle East
Imperialism in the Middle EastBuy a copy from our shop

He who would understand the economics and politics of the middle east from the beginning of the twentieth century must learn to spell, pronounce and really grasp the significance of just one word – OIL.

This single word furnishes the key to an understanding of all the burning questions of war and peace in the area, ranging from the struggle of the leading imperialist powers to carve up the middle east in the aftermath of the first imperialist war to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the war in Lebanon, the Gulf War, the war in the Balkans, and the war in Afghanistan, presently being conducted with characteristic brutality by US and British imperialism.

What distinguishes oil is that is has become the commodity of all commodities, the basis on which is built the entire edifice of modern society. It is also the material that fuels the war machines of the imperialist powers.

With two thirds of known global oil reserves located there, it is no wonder that the middle east has become a centre of major contradictions. The furious competition and the hunt for sources of war materials continue in our own day to fuel the ceaseless war of the imperialist countries against the oppressed peoples and exacerbate interimperialist contradictions.

This book is, on the one hand, an attempt to explain the events in the middle east in the light of the above statement and, on the other hand, by way of an expression of our solidarity with the struggle of the Arab peoples, especially the Palestinian people, against imperialist war, aggression and brigandage.
