Letter: Support the Iraqi national resistance! |
|
The following was written by a party member to The Guardian in response to an obituary for IFTU secretary Hadi Saleh. |

Dear Sir
Now that Alex Gordon has availed himself of the Obituary columns of your newspaper (20 January 2005) to pursue his vendetta against the Iraqi resistance movement, it is time to set the record straight.
British imperialism is jointly engaged in waging a war of national oppression against Iraq. In opposition to this has sprung up a national resistance movement of immense courage and resourcefulness.
Those in Britain who wish to emancipate themselves from wage slavery should give full support to the brave men and women who are sacrificing everything in their resistance to the criminal aggression of our own ruling class.
Instead, Alex Gordon encourages his fellow trade unionists to ally themselves with the Iraq Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU), an organisation which resists calls for the immediate withdrawal of occupying forces, writes off the resistance struggle as "terrorism", and demands the right to build "independent" trade unions under the protection of imperialist guns.
This syndicalist disruption of the national democratic struggle imperils the lives of many brave liberation fighters. It is doubtful, however, that their obituaries will ever be recorded in your newspaper.
Yours faithfully
Giles Shorter |
